The exhibit will run from April 10 to May 10, with a reception open to the public on Friday, April 28, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

During the reception, scheduled as part of ArtWeek Boston, I will give a talk on my creative career, which began as a graduate of the School of Fashion Design, and explain how that experience led to my current work as a professional artist.

The show will include works from my "Filigree" series, most of which are being exhibited for the very first time. The shapes in this series are inspired by expansive, looping forms such as fiber weaves, calligraphic marks, and natural shapes like roots and vines.

The School of Fashion Design is open Monday and Friday 9 AM to 4 PM, Tuesday to Thursday 9 AM to 9 PM, and Saturday 9 AM to 3 PM. More information is available at CatherineCarterPainting.com.
I've been working on a small series of acrylic and fabric collages on canvas, all 12" square. I'm enjoying them so much that I feel I could keep going and going with this theme!
(Yes, I was one of those kids whose favorite holiday gift was always the giant box of Crayola crayons.)

I plunged right in as soon as the Fed Ex man brought it to my door, and made this 12" square canvas using a combination of blues and greens.

And not because there has been nothing to write about!

It seems strange to look back at that last post. When I wrote it, I had no idea where my new studio would be. It was intimidating to consider the daunting road ahead: I needed to find a new place; get moved in; get set up; and get my creative routine rolling again.

Fast forward five months, and here we are. The space is at Hatch Street Studios, a dynamic community of 50+ artists working in a restored 19th-century textile mill in the historic North End of New Bedford. Soon after I moved in on October 1, the group held its annual open studios event, and I was excited to participate. Many old friends came by, including one I hadn't seen since 1982 and one I hadn't seen since 2010, and there were many new guests who seemed to enjoy my work. I was pleased that a piece from my "Bubble" series sold to an enthusiastic collector who is also an artist.

A week later (last weekend), I dismantled the open studio setup and arranged the space in the ideal way for me to work, and a few days ago, I finally put brush to canvas. So I'm decidedly headed down a new road, looking forward to turning the new studio into a productive place to work.

Here are some photos documenting my activities in the new space.
You are caught between fond memories of your old life but excited by imaginings of the new one. My life circumstances have shifted, and I am now now bidding farewell to the studio I have enjoyed for the past 12 years. It has been located in the spacious walkout basement of the house my husband and I have been renting in Holliston, Massachusetts, and this proximity has been one of its best features. No need to drive anywhere or even get dressed; I could just pad downstairs in my pajamas and stretch a canvas or add a layer.
<span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">While I will miss this room, it is time to move on to new artistic adventures. I have to admit, I am excited to be getting a fresh start! For a moment, though, I want to take one last look back and give thanks for the opportunity I had to work here.
These works are titled (not surprisingly) "Sky Lines," and are made of acrylic and paper collage on canvas, measuring 40" high by 30" wide. I'm enjoying the unexpected combination of real and unreal.
In the case of my studio, the new year will bring a major transition. After 12 years in the same space, I will be relocating, with all of the personal and artistic reevaluation (not to mention elbow grease) that experience entails. I feel overwhelmed but excited by the prospect!

In addition to the process of organizing and boxing my possessions, I have been squeezing some last-minute creation time out of my old studio. The result is a series of fabric and paper collages on 8- and 12-inch-square boards (shown below), aimed for an upcoming solo show at Gallery 65 on William this May. In making these pieces, I have focused on my love of graffiti, with the intention of packing a visual punch into each tiny square.

Thank you as always for your interest in and support of my ever-unfolding career as a painter. For regular updates, feel free to connect with me via the Facebook and Twitter links below; a complete display of my artwork is available at my website, CatherineCarterPainting.com.

I send you my warmest wishes for a brilliant New Year!

Catherine

I'm impressed by how much energy can be compacted into such a tiny space! I'm referencing my long-time graffiti interest here (I did an in-depth research project on graffiti as an undergraduate), trying to express that influence in an elegant "Art Nouveau" way.

Ultimately these pieces will appear in an upcoming solo show in 2016; details to come.
Here are the first two, and I have the "ingredients" for many more:

These are the initial layers of inspiration; I will be adding more paint on top and then reshaping and reconfiguring them. More fun to come!
I am beginning the task of closing up my current studio in anticipation of an upcoming move next spring. It is with mixed feelings that I do so; this space has served me well over the past 11 years, as you can read from this earlier post. I will definitely look back on my time here with fond memories.

However, I am also feeling the need to move on to something new. We artists know the direct if sometimes subconscious effect that one's working space has on the artwork that's produced there. It's probably a good time in my career to shake things up. We'll see what the future holds!

In the meantime, I'm sorting through the flotsam and jetsam of more than a decade of a dedicated studio practice, trying to honestly evaluate what needs to be discarded and what needs to move along with me.
But I have a productive summer in the studio to look back on with fond memories. Here's the last painting I completed, a few weeks ago, which takes the basic composition I have been exploring in my "Filigree" series into the realm of color.

As yet untitled, acrylic on canvas, 20" square

In career news, the summer season ambled along as it usually does, quiet and uneventful, then things wrapped up with a burst of opportunity toward the end of August: a painting sale and offers of two upcoming shows. Details to come, on this site!Catherine Carterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00436800214622635920noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6582470877898434732.post-32925417912644835842015-08-12T23:59:00.001-07:002015-08-12T23:59:37.790-07:00New home"Yellow Mosaic" has just been purchased for a private collection in Tiverton, Rhode Island. It's acrylic on paper on canvas, 30" square, 2014. Yay!

... into a large wall-mounted installation. I was thinking of mounting the fabric I print onto round canvases and then positioning them across a wall, then I got the idea to press the fabric onto clear contact paper trimmed into circles and mount that on a wall. That's enough of a plan to get me going, so here's the first step: creating the fabric in the first place.

We'll see how the next step goes!Catherine Carterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00436800214622635920noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6582470877898434732.post-6361042743577072192015-07-18T22:31:00.002-07:002015-07-18T22:32:02.329-07:00Old meets newIt's interesting when older works intercept with newer ones, in ways that you as the artist didn't plan or anticipate! These two paintings seem to have been made for each other, even though the one with the circles was created in 2010 and the one with the lines was completed last month. I only noticed the connection because both works were selected for presentation by an art consultant.
A good time for barbeques and fireworks, right? Well, I admit, I'd rather be organizing my studio! Here are some views of the finished product.

I moved several of my tables to the sides of the room, and now I have more space to move around in. And more space to invite new ideas into my work!

Then I moved my shelving units together along one wall, which also frees up physical and mental space.

And finally I created a comfortable corner to curl up in and contemplate.

Now I'm all ready to plunge into some new canvases!Catherine Carterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00436800214622635920noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6582470877898434732.post-3251069707888719412015-06-27T03:08:00.003-07:002015-06-27T03:08:33.473-07:00All together nowMy burst of springtime energy in the studio has come to fruition just as spring turns to summer: among other artworks, I've added to an ongoing series, the "Mosaics." Yesterday they were all photographed, and this morning I'm putting the images on line.

Here are three of the latest Mosaics, which I'm very happy with. They all appear together on my art consultant website: CatherineCarterFineArt.com
Lately I've been creating a series of triptychs made from paintings on both paper and canvas, collaged onto panels and grouped according to general color scheme. Here are my first two; each panel is 14" square:
Here is one of my canvases on display there:
The calm and resolute productivity I experienced in the studio since late April has imploded into an overdrive mode of driven, crackling energy! The ideas keep flying, faster than I can catch them and manufacture them.

I'm planning a series of colorful diptychs, but had to order a set of cradled boards to mount them on, and the order isn't due to be delivered until the middle of next week. I've also put my "Filigree" series on hold while I get the pieces I created (seven 40x30 and nine 20x20 canvases) photographed. So now I'm adding to the "Mosaic" series I was working on during January-April 2014. Here's the latest piece, as yet untitled; it's acrylic on paper collaged onto 40" square canvas.

Busy, busy, busy! As a full summer schedule of teaching approaches, I'm happy to have a chance to eke out a few more weeks of steady studio time!
